Goal setting – tips on maintaining focus and momentum

We are committed to helping our clients define and achieve their goals and in this blog, Laura Phelps-Naqvi explores how our Goal Mentor toolkit can help, providing a quick and easy way for people to record and share their goals...

It’s often this time when people start to lose motivation around the goals they set themselves at the start of the year, or in some cases abandon them completely. We have developed tools that can increase the chances of goal success to a whopping 95%... pretty good, hey!

Let’s take the example of new year's resolutions; many people decide on upping their fitness levels as a new year priority, this is then reflected in an increased number of gym sign-ups and footfall on the gym floor during the early months of the year. Then you often see a dip, and an increased focus reappear over the summer, as people get ready for some much-needed sunshine. Then, predictably, it tails off again.

So, what creates these peaks and troughs? Focus, purpose, and goal setting. For example, the desire to feel fit and healthy or the focus on an upcoming holiday; encourages people to dust off their footwear. Now of course this is a generalisation, but the research does tell us time and time again that goals and timeframes do help us to stay focused, and then in turn we are more likely to achieve our desired objectives.

At Kiddy & Partners and t-three, we are committed to helping our clients define and achieve their goals (e.g.corporate ambitions to personal aspirations). When we create development initiatives (development programmes, workshops, learning journeys, coaching) we start by asking two key questions:

1. Why are we doing this activity?

2. What will success look like and where do we want to move the dial?

A huge amount of effort by all then goes into creating such programmes, which are carefully crafted and communicated within the organisation. A key watch out is around how such initiatives are tracked and how people stay focused on their development goals and actions when the momentum around such programmes starts to wane.

This is where our ‘Goal Mentor’ toolkit can really help…

Our research into behaviour change has told us that it takes between 6-8 repetitions of new behaviour for it to become part of our day-to-day and up to 91 days before a new behaviour becomes an automatic habit. Additionally, publicly sharing our goals raises our chance of success by around 65%, but interestingly, if we do this with carefully nominated ‘motivators’ we can increase the chances of our success to 95%.

This brings us to the key features of our Goal Mentor tool:

- Goal Mentor provides a quick and easy way for people to record and share their goals.

- Once a goal has been created, the platform will ask you to nominate a number of goal mentors. Goal mentors can be anyone you work closely with who can provide feedback on how you are doing against your goal.

- After inputting your goal and selecting your goal mentors, the platform will send you a nudge every 30 days, offering highly practical advice and insight to keep you on track, along with a slider asking how you feel you are progressing.

- Finally, after 90 days, a note is sent to each of your nominated goal mentors prompting them to provide feedback on the progress they have seen you make against your goal.

Providing feedback as a goal mentor is quick and easy. Once completed, the participant can view the feedback from their selected goal mentors on the dashboard, along with a comparison as to how they feel they have progressed against their goals. Additionally, the tool can populate the data into an anonymous composite report for a cohort or group; providing a strong evaluation measure to demonstrate the impact your development initiative has delivered back into your organisation.

This is just one of the many products and services that we offer, both helping participants stay focused and embed their learning, whilst also supporting organisations to track outcomes and return on investment. If you would like to find out more, please get in touch at sayhello@t-three.com.
